Comments:

Interview with Jon Siddall and acoustic session was recorded on December 7, 1999 in Toronto.

The show was broadcast later on February 26, 2000 (The Day The Earth Was Still incorrectly lists this as March 6, 2000 - but the announcer refers to the future launch of SOTSOG on Feb 28 and upcoming Japanese Tour, must be a mistake?).

It seems like there were a few different sources for this recording: some of the broadcasts faded straight from Jon Siddall's final outro to the DJ Announcer:

Jon Siddall: "So thanks to Noel Gallagher, to Gem and Mike Rowe for coming into the good ol CBC, I'm Jon Siddall for Radio Sonic."
DJ Announcer: "Well there you go, OASIS and Jon Siddall..."

...but some of the sources crossfade from Jon Siddall into "Rock n Roll Star" followed by the DJ Announcer. Maybe the show was syndicated to other stations who didn't include "Rock n Roll Star"?

On The Toronto CBC Session the interview ends/fades out before "Rock 'n' Roll Star" starts. This disc also contains two versions of the first three songs - with interview and without. The rest of the disc is filled with the widely-circulated SOTSOG demos ("Gas Panic", "Go Let It Out", "Where Did It All Go Wrong", "Cigarettes in Hell" - including skips - and "Getting Older").

The "crowflies" source has some audible FM noise/squelch in the background of the interviews. "Talk Tonight" was removed from the release under the belief that it was an official release when it was still part of the acoustic session!

Recording the session:
You don't know till you try. So thought Jon Siddall, a Vancouver-based CBC Radio producer, when he called Sony Music Canada in December to request some exclusive studio time with Oasis.

It seems the mega-selling British band was planning a semi-secret promotional visit to Canada. After some transatlantic confab, Sony said that Noel Gallagher, the band's star songwriter, vocalist and lead guitarist, would play two songs, but only in Toronto.

No problem. Siddall flew east, got hold of Studio 211 at the CBC Broadcasting Centre in Toronto, and was waiting at the door when Gallagher blew in with new Oasis guitarist Gem Archer and touring pianist Mike Rowe.

"I'm fookin' bored to be here," said Gallagher, as he slouched into the studio with his mates, apparently expecting a quick-and-dirty session in a low-fi radio studio. But when they saw a fine grand piano, a load of distinctly non-shabby audio gear, and Siddall standing sharp in the control room, the trio loosened up for a cracking acoustic rendition of two songs from Oasis's forthcoming album, Standing on the Shoulder of Giants. (It's in record stores next week.)

"As soon as they'd finished, before anybody could move," Siddall said, "I went barrelling into the studio and said, 'Hey, this is great! Can we have an encore?' " Disarmed by this gambit, perhaps, and apparently enjoying himself, Gallagher said, "What would you like?" Siddall suggested Talk Tonight, released as the B-side to the Oasis hit single Some Might Say. So they played that, and followed it with two more tunes, including Rock 'n' Roll Star, all in acoustic versions such as had never been recorded before.

Back in Vancouver, and somewhere over the moon, Siddall mixed the tapes for Radio Sonic, which will air four of the songs tomorrow at 10 p.m. with an interview with Gallagher.

But this happy story has an even happier sequel: Just this week, Oasis's management requested and got licence from the CBC to use the tracks for promotional purposes in Europe, when the band's new album is released next week. The CBC won't make any money from the deal, but it got the stuff cheap to start with: Gallagher and Co. played for scale. Something to remember the next time you hear the honourable member from Windbag gassing on about waste at the CBC.

Interview with Jon Sidall
In 2023 I reached out to Jon Siddall for some more info on this session. He was kind enough to reply:
There were five songs recorded that day. The fifth never made it to air at Noel's request. It was a cover of The Beatles "Revolution". They got close, but not close enough. I understood why he'd prefer to put it aside.

Let's see, we're at 23 years ago....bit hard to remember the broadcast details, although the recording session is a vivid memory. It was done primarily for a show called Radiosonic who aired the entire interview and four songs. I believe Definitely Not the Opera aired one song and maybe some of the interview. And a local CBC Vancouver show interviewed me and played a track from the session - probably RocknRoll Star.

I can add a detail about the recording session - after playing the two songs they had intended to play, I did indeed, as the Globe article reports, go barreling into the live room to see if I could convince Noel to play a few more songs. I asked if they would be into playing something else. Noel asked, "What?" I replied, "I dunno, do you want to jam something out?" Noel kinda screwed up his face and said "Jam?" I quickly replied, "how about Talk Tonight?" And so they played it. And then went on from there without coaxing. He was generous and great to work with after overcoming his initial skepticism.
...maybe one day the unreleased take of "Revolution" will get released from the CBC vaults? Here's hoping.
